18 partners from 13 different European countries – comprising six municipalities, nine universities and three industry partners – will focus on energy efficiency planning and sustainable city planning during the project life cycle of 36 months.
So how came this project idea up? What makes
this project so relevant?
As energy efficiency is at present high on the
European agenda, one of the goals of the European Union’s 20-20-20 plan is to
improve energy efficiency by 20% in 2020. However, holistic knowledge about
energy efficiency potentials in cities is far from complete. Currently, a
variety of individual strategies and approaches by different stakeholders
tackling separate key aspects hinders strategic energy efficiency planning.
This is the point where PLEEC project puts the
focus on:
PLEEC - “Planning for Energy Efficient Cities” - uses an integrative
approach to achieve the sustainable, energy–efficient, smart city.
By coordinating strategies and combining best
practices - on the basis of six participating European cities
(Eskilstuna (SE), Jväskylä (FI), Turku (FI), Tartu (EE), Santiago de Compostela
(ES) and Stoke-on-Trent (UK) - the project will develop a general model for energy
efficiency and sustainable city planning.
