We are approaching an important milestone within the PLEEC project. The parallel running Work Packages 3, 4 and 5 are coming to an end and the respective Work Package leaders are releasing their final reports. This is a good opportunity to present you the leader of Work Package 4 - the Department of Geosciences and Natural Resource Management (IGN) of the University of Copenhagen.

The Department of Geosciences and Natural Resource Management (IGN) is a broadly based department at the Faculty of Science at the University of Copenhagen (UCPH). IGN’s activities include research and development, BSc and MSc courses and adult education/continuity training, servicing the public sector, innovation, monitoring, consultancy and outreach as well as international development and environmental assistance.

The PLEEC work load of UCPH/IGN is located in the Section of Landscape Architecture and Planning. The section has about 80 employees and is responsible for a wide range of research and teaching activities within landscape architecture and urban design, urban and rural planning, sustainable urban development, land use change, geographic information systems, urban governance, socio-economic cohesion, green infrastructure and urban and landscape ecology.

The section of Landscape Architecture and Planning is involved in several national and international research and policy-consultancy projects and the work on the intersection between urban planning and environmental and resource issues are one of its main competences. Methods applied in the section include both quantitative and qualitative research, policy support, stakeholder interaction and collaborative learning.

As leader of PLEEC´s Work package 4 the University of Copenhagen deals with the question ’How can urban planning contribute to higher energy efficiency, energy saving and transition to renewable energy sources?’.

To answer this question UCPH has conducted in-depth case studies on all six PLEEC partner cities (Deliverable 4.2) and made a comprehensive review of the role of urban planning in the three main sectors of energy consumption (households, transport, industry) as well for the supply of (renewable) energy (Deliverable 4.3). In the summary report on urban energy planning on

potentials and barriers in six cities (Deliverable 4.4) the focus is on the (potential) application of measures and policies in urban planning to improve the energy performance of cities. Summaries and recommendations for each of the six PLEEC cities are given.

UCPH participates also in WP2 (smart city profiles and indicators), WP5 (behaviour and energy), WP6 (synthesis and action plans) and WP7 (dissemination).
